Osteoporosis in Men

I came across this great article in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism on the guidelines that have been drawn up regarding osteoporosis in men.  This is important because most people automatically think of women when it comes to osteoporosis but it can affect men as well — albeit at a lesser rate.

The Study in a Nutshell

  • Men at high risk for osteoporosis should be screened with DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry)
  • At risk meaning 70 years or older or younger men with risk factors such low body weight, smoking and previous fracture(s)
  • Men with low vitamin D levels should take vitamin D supplements
  • Men with or at risk for osteoporosis should take 1000-1200 mg of calcium daily − preferably from dietary sources
  • Men 50 years or older with a prior spine or hip fracture, low bone mineral density or other clinical risk factors should receive drug therapy
  • Men receiving treatment should have their bone mineral density assessed by DXA at the spine and hip every 1-2 years

Dietary Sources of Calcium

Cheese, turnip greens, lamb, sardines, collard greens, rhubarb, yogurt, milk, spinach, tofu and broccoli.
