What’s a Menstrual Cup?

What’s a Menstrual Cup?

I know that there is a lot of talk these day regarding the environment − and very rightly so!  The environment is a very important topic and we should each do everything that we can to preserve what we have and improve it for our children and our children’s children.

There’s Something Else Other Than Pads/Tampons!

So, with that in mind, I wanted to discuss another option for women when it comes to their periods.  This is a much more environmentally friendly option versus the typical pads and/or tampons.

I first learned about the DivaCup when I was a student at CCNM (the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine) in my women’s health class.  I was shocked that I had never heard about this earlier.  Go to their website at www.divacup.com where you will find lots of information regarding what it is, how it works, where to find it, and much more.

What’s a DivaCup®?

Below is a brief description from their website explaining what it is:

The DivaCup®

It goes where?  I have to what?  Yes, you wear the DivaCup in “there”, in your vagina … but we promise, it is not as scary as it sounds.  In fact, your body will thank you for giving it the period care it deserves.

The DivaCup is a reusable, bell-shaped menstrual cup that is worn internally and sits low in the vaginal canal, collecting rather than absorbing your menstrual flow.  Menstrual cups have existed since the 1930s when women were searching for an alternative to the choices of the time.  Yet, its breakthrough into the feminine hygiene industry is much more recent.

Many women feel uneasy about changing their menstrual care routine.  Years of dealing with the signs and odors of disposable tampons and pads cause the familiar reaction: “ick!”.  The DivaCup empowers women to connect with their bodies and menstrual cycles like never before.  Perfect for all activities (on air, land or sea), its easy care and use make  for a better period experience.  Wear the DivaCup up to 12 hours without leaks or worry.

The DivaCup features:

  1. 12 hour leak-free protection!
  2. Made from the highest quality healthcare grade silicon to assure comfort and durability.
  3. Does not contain any of the following: latex, plastic, PVC, acrylic, acrylate, BPA, phthalate, elastomer, polyethylene, and free of colors and dyes.
  4. Reusable and eco-friendly − no waste, no chemicals.
  5. Features extra grip ridges for easier removal.
  6. Cleared for marketing by the US FDA and the Australian TGA and the only reusable menstrual cup allowed to be sold in Canada by Health Canada.
  7. Diva International Inc. is the only ISO 13485:2003 certified menstrual cup manufacturer and head office in the world!

The Take-Away Message

If you’ve thought about it before but was scared off, I’m here to tell you that it’s WORTH another look.  It’s great for the environment because it’s reusable AND you keep pads and tampons out of the landfills.  It’s great for your pocketbook because you don’t have to purchase any pads or tampons on a monthly basis.  It’s great from a convenience standpoint because you can just use it if you suspect that your period is coming soon and not have to worry about any leaks while you’re out and about.  And it’s great for travel as well because you no longer have to calculate and pack the appropriate amount of pads and/or tampons during a trip.  Instead, you can just toss a menstrual cup into your bag and off you go!
